Amateur jockey Lorna Brooke is in a "serious but stable" condition in intensive care after suffering a heavy fall at Taunton on Thursday.

Brooke was treated on track before being airlifted to Southmeads Hospital in Bristol after falling from Orchestrated at the third fence in the 2m7f handicap chase. The ten-year-old, who is trained by the jockey's mother Lady Susan Brooke, was unscathed in the incident.

The Injured Jockeys Fund (IJF) issued a statement on behalf of her family on Friday, which read: "She's in intensive care in a serious but stable condition, and is conscious. She's undergoing observations and tests for a suspected spinal injury. Her parents, Sir Alistair and Lady Susan Brooke, kindly ask for privacy at this difficult time."

The final race was delayed for an hour after the incident and clerk of the course Jason Loosemore said on Thursday: "All our thoughts are with Lorna, racing is irrelevant when incidents like that happen."

Brooke, a 7lb claiming amateur, has taken more than 400 rides since 2000 and has ridden 17 winners in Britain and Ireland, where she landed a handicap chase at Fairyhouse for trainer Paul Stafford.
