US sports betting reaches milestone with mobile bets launched in New York
The rapidly expanding sports betting market in the United States reached another milestone over the weekend with the first mobile bets being made in the state of New York.
New York is the largest US state to legalise sports betting since the repeal of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (Paspa) in 2018 and, within 12 hours of its launching on Saturday, transaction volumes had reached record levels – more than double the next highest state of Pennsylvania.
Gavin Kelleher, gaming and leisure analyst at stockbrokers Goodbody, said: "While it is hard to draw conclusions from such early days, New York appears to be well on the way to becoming the largest US sports betting state in volume terms."
