Prolonged dry weather and equine flu compromised what promised to be a mouthwatering season to such an extent that some may have been underwhelmed at times, but nobody could accuse 2018-19 of being predictable.

At this time last year you could have had any price you liked for Clan Des Obeaux in the King George, for Espoir D’Allen in the Champion Hurdle, for Paisley Park in the Stayers’ Hurdle or for Al Boum Photo in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, yet they were worthy winners, each and every one of them.

As for Cyrname ending the season officially the highest-rated chaser, ahead of Altior. Pure pie in the sky.
