Frankie Dettori: 'We were on our arse. I had bills coming in and wasn't earning'

For a few moments at Ascot on Qipco British Champions Day, Frankie Dettori morphed into his father.

As he gave his instant reaction to the performance of Stradivarius in the afternoon's opening race, Lanfranco became Gianfranco, quick to critique and condemn the actions of a young jockey he believed had erred most egregiously.

The recipient of Frankie's ire was Dylan Browne McMonagle, referred to only as "the kid in front". When Dettori snr laid down the law it was to his own kid, even long after the boy had turned into a man and that man had turned into the world's most famous jockey. Reassuringly, the younger Dettori must have done something right, for there is now a film chronicling his life. At the centre of that film and that life is a fascinating relationship between father and son.
