Welcome news this week that Horse Racing Ireland is to give priority to issues of welfare in its new strategic plan for the next five years.

According to HRI chief executive Brian Kavanagh this means animal welfare and human welfare.

I hope all of us who work with horses day in, day out understand the importance of the horse's welfare. Unfortunately I think we've been a bit behind the times in terms of human welfare and that has contributed to one of the big issues in Irish racing at present, a shortage of stable staff.
