'I've taken a lot from football and transferred it to training horses'

My family has a sport-horse background, with showjumpers and event horses at home. That kept me busy as I was growing up and I competed up to two-star level.

Racing was always there in the background though, as my uncle John Byrne kept thoroughbreds, but it wasn’t until I went to work for Jonathan Fogarty that I really caught the racing bug.

I'd gone to the sales in Tattersalls with my cousin Vincent who was friendly with Johnny, and he mentioned that he was on the lookout for someone to work in the yard. I'd just finished school and thought I wouldn’t mind giving it a go.
