Does the man once turned down for a licence "because my horses were crap" now train the best that anyone has?

That is just one of the intriguing thoughts aired in a fascinating couple of hours in the company of Jim Goldie on a sunny Renfrewshire hillside 15 miles from Glasgow.

The horse who dominates conversation is Euchen Glen, who beat Coral-Eclipse winner St Mark's Basilica – on the clock at least – when landing a second big prize of the season at Sandown, just a few days after the remarkable Northumberland Plate victory of Nicholas T.
