Godolphin

Key players Sheikh Mohammed (principal), Anthony Stroud (agent)
What they spent last year 22,020,000gns

Sheikh Mohammed's operation is a byword for Tattersalls Book 1 and buyer Anthony Stroud was on the lookout during inspections at Park Paddocks on Monday.

Last year Godolphin spent 22.02 million guineas, headed by the 3.7m gns Siyouni half-sister to Fillies' Mile victress Ylang Ylang and the 2.9m gns Dark Angel sister to champion miler Charyn. A bookmaker would go pretty short odds that Godolphin will head the buyers' table again and confidence will be high when Sheikh Mohammed himself appears on the scene on Tuesday, as expected.

Amo Racing

Key players Kia Joorabchian (principal), Alex Elliott (agent)
What they spent last year 22,940,000gns

Kia Joorabchian's operation has made an almighty splash in the bloodstock world and last year's Book 1 total spend came to a lofty 22,940,000gns, headed by the sale-topping Frankel filly out of Royal Ascot winner Aljazzi. That 4.4mn gns purchase has not made her debut yet, but the next most expensive lot of the sale – and most expensive yearling colt ever sold in Europe – was sixth on his debut at Haydock recently for Karl Burke. That Wootton Bassett colt out of a Galileo sister to Oaks heroine Was is called Poker.

Five seven-figure lots went the way of Amo at Park Paddocks this time last year and something similar could well be in the offing this week.

Coolmore

Key player MV Magnier (principal)
What they spent last year 4,645,000gns

Coolmore have more often than not hit the mark when it comes to seven-figure purchases at Book 1, with Diego Velazquez and Ylang Ylang among their recent buys who have captured Group 1 glory.

Last year MV Magnier, often in partnership with White Birch Farm, bought nine lots headed by the 1.5m gns Frankel filly out of Mohaather's high-class sister Prize Exhibit. That filly is Minerva, who has yet to win but has collected valuable Group black type, while the 200,000gns colt by Wootton Bassett out of Galileo Bound has turned out to be Italy. He defeated Royal Ascot runner-up up and subsequent Listed scorer Thesecretadversary on his debut and has placed in Group 3 company on his next three starts, including when third in the National Stakes at the Curragh.

Juddmonte

Key players Prince Fahad, Prince Saud and Prince Ahmed Al Saud (principals)
What they spent last year 1,200,000gns

Juddmonte are less frequent buyers at the sales than their fellow superpowers, but the late Khalid Abdullah's operation has continued to buy well-bred fillies and colts to support their racing and breeding operations.

At Book 1 last year, Juddmonte signed for a Kingman colt out of a Dark Angel half-sister to St James's Palace Stakes winner Barney Roy at 500,000gns, and a Frankel colt out of Listed-winning Dream Ahead mare Archer's Dream at 700,000gns. The operation tend to make selective purchases in support of their stallions, in addition to adding fresh bloodlines to the top-notch broodmare band.

Others to watch

Wathnan Racing definitely fall into this category, the burgeoning operation having been boosted by the Group/Grade 1 exploits of Fallen Angel, Silawi and Lazzat in recent times. The Emir of Qatar's racing adviser is Richard Brown of Blandford Bloodstock, whose name appeared against 22 lots at a total spend of 10,515,000gns last year. US agent Mike Ryan has proved a shrewd investor at Book 1 over the past few years, and signed for 13 yearlings last year, mainly in tandem with Klaravich Stables, for whom Chad Brown has produced plenty of success with Newmarket purchases.
