There was last year's 2,000 Guineas lacking champion two-year-old Too Darn Hot, and the Grand National without long-time ante-post favourite Blaklion. But has there been a bigger case of Hamlet without the prince in recent times than Ryan McElligott having to sit out the 2020 ITBA Mark O'Hanlon Memorial Quiz on Tuesday evening?
Journalist, jockeys' agent and pinhooker, McElligott has forgotten more about Irish racing than most will ever know and boasts Frankelesque form figures at the quiz, jointly sponsored by the Racing Post and Irish Field and held at the Lord Bagenal Inn in Leighlinbridge.
Taking advantage of his absence, team Racing Post, comprising full-timers James Thomas and yours truly and contributors Aisling Crowe and Tyrone Molloy, emerged victorious.
