Johanna Konta's clay major dream thwarted by teak-tough Vondrousova

Johanna Konta is 16-1 for Wimbledon, which starts early next month, after her dream of becoming the first British woman to reach a major final since 1977 was nipped in the bud by Marketa Vondrousova.

Konta, who was seeded 26th at Roland Garros, had played some of the best tennis of her career to reach the last four in Paris, but it wasn’t enough as a battling Vondrousova proved her superior.

The 28-year-old Konta, who under coach Dimitri Zavialoff has regained the composure she had when rising to world number four in the rankings two years ago, tallied more winners than her opponent – 33 compared to Vondrousova’s 21.

But the victor dominated the Brit in terms of points won at the net (83 per cent compared to 37), unforced errors (22 to 41), total points won (84 to 74), first-serve winners (65 per cent to 54) and receiving points won (45 per cent to 37).

Konta, who had been a 150-1 shot for Paris prior to reaching the Rome final in May, was a top-priced 60-1 for Roland Garros. However, even though the Eastbourne ace was favourite to win her semi-final, Vondrousova, who was 200-1 with Paddy Power in January, was shorter than Konta ante-post at 50-1.

Eleven-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal survived the high winds to defeat Roger Federer 6-3 6-4 6-2 to reach his 12th Roland Garros final.

Federer had won their five previous meetings, all on hard courts, but while the Swiss veteran is playing well this was all about the defending champion.

Nadal will face either Novak Djokovic or Dominic Thiem as he chases an 18th major title.

That match, which was called off due to rain on Friday afternoon with the scoreline at one set all and Thiem a break up in set three, will be concluded on Saturday from 11am.

French Open men’s singles best prices: 4-11 R Nadal, 5 N Djokovic, 11-2 D Thiem.
