Match preview

Only Olympic gold will do for the USA's women's football team in Japan but defeat to Australia in their final group game on Tuesday morning could see them suffer an embarrassing early exit.

Team USA were 4-7 to land a fifth Olympic title in Japan before the competition began, but they slumped to a opening 3-0 defeat at the hands of Sweden - the same side who dumped them out at the quarter-final stage in Rio.

The Stars and Stripes responded in the style of champions by hitting New Zealand for six and they are a warm order at 2-9 to take care of Australia in their final group encounter.

A draw would be enough for Vlatko Andonovski’s side to progress due to their superior goal difference, but they’d surely like to send out a statement of intent to their knockout opponents with an emphatic victory over the Aussies.

And if Australia’s opening two fixtures are anything to go by, then goals look assured in what is essentially a straight shootout for second spot behind the Swedes.

The Aussies began their Olympic campaign with a 2-1 win over New Zealand but were outclassed by Sweden in a 4-2 defeat last time out.

The Matildas have classy Chelsea striker Samantha Kerr, who has scored three goals in Japan and missed a penalty against the Swedes, leading the line and she has the quality to cause plenty of problems for a US side who are yet to keep a clean sheet.

The US, who have won gold in four of the six previous Olympic competitions and are still 5-4 to triumph in Tokyo, should prevail, although the Aussies could have some joy against their suspect defence.

There is much less at stake in the other Group G tussle taking place on Tuesday morning, with Sweden 1-10 to maintain their 100 per cent record and confirm top spot with victory over New Zealand.
