Match preview

Argentina were the last nation to defend their gold medal in the men's Olympic football back in 2008 but Brazil can emulate their South American rivals with victory over Spain in Tokyo this weekend.

The Spanish last came out on top in the men's football in the inaugural under-23 tournament back in 1992 and their current squad has undoubtedly shone brightly in Japan.

But they were far from dominant in the group stage, scoring only twice in three matches with Egypt, Argentina and Australia, and they have been taken to extra time in both their quarter-final and semi-final matches.

Not dissimilar to the shot-shy Spain team at Euro 2020, a lack of end product threatens to hold them back and they required a moment of magic from Marco Asensio to overcome hosts Japan in the last four.

The same cannot, however, be said for 2016 Olympic gold medallists Brazil.

Andre Jardine's side won two of their three group matches, which included a comfortable 4-2 win over Germany.

They drew the other and then dispatched Egypt 1-0 in the last eight, managing five shots on target and 63 per cent possession in that contest.

Brazil required penalties to see off Mexico in the semi-finals but converted all four of their spot-kicks and their superior ability in the final third should see them over the line in this game.

Richarlison has been the star of the tournament, following his Copa America exploits with five goals in Tokyo, and he will be key in the gold medal match.

And in Matheus Cunha, who was top scorer in the Conmebol Pre-Olympic Tournament, Paulinho and Gabriel Martinelli among others, Brazil have the attacking depth to pry open Spain in what is likely to be a tight encounter.
