Season preview & Croatia Grand Prix

A brand new era of Grand Prix speedway gets underway in Croatia on Saturday evening with global promoter Discovery Sports Events at the helm.

Sixteen of the world’s best riders will compete across 11 action-packed rounds in their quest to lift the biggest and most prestigious prize in the sport.

Reigning world champion Artem Laguta and last season’s bronze medallist Emil Sayfutdinov will not take part in this series due to an FIM ban on Russian athletes. They have been replaced by youngsters Jack Holder and Dan Bewley in a move which has arguably diluted the depth and quality of the field.

That means that Bartosz Zmarzlik is the odds-on favourite to claim the World Championship crown and his price looks fully justified.

Since joining the series in 2016, the ultra-consistent Pole has won an impressive five medals in six years, clinching gold in 2019 and 2020.

He was denied the hat-trick by just three points last season, despite winning a remarkable five of the 11 Grand Prix rounds which saw him finish 40 points ahead of third-placed Sayfutdinov.

Zmarzlik has started the domestic league season in scintillating form and, barring injury, it would be a big surprise were he not celebrating a third world title come the autumn.

Gorican, the home of Croatian speedway, returns to the calendar on Saturday following a ten-year absence and with such little track running, the unique sandy circuit could prove a leveller.

Freddie Lindgren often delivers his best performances away from the high-speed nature of Polish tracks and he has more experience than most around the Stadion Milenium having raced to back-to-back finals there in 2010 and 2011.

The Swede has a habit of starting the season strongly - he’s reached the final in the last five series openers - and worth a small each-way interest in his bid to enhance that tally.
