Dustin Johnson is proving a popular pick with punters to capture the US Open, which starts at Pebble Beach on Thursday.

The 2016 champion has claimed eight top-ten finishes in 11 attempts at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am at the Californian venue and a flood of bets has led Coral to cut him to just 7-1 for a second Major crown.

Johnson, won has won the Saudi International and the WGC-Mexico Championship this year, is 9-1 for glory with Betfred.

Coral's John Hill said: "Dustin Johnson is the player we will be fearing this week as punters have been rushing in to back the 2016 winner."

Hill reported that Tiger Woods has been friendless to claim his 16th Major title after winning The Masters at Augusta in April, but they have seen plenty of money for Patrick Cantlay.

Ladbrokes punters seem more convinced by recent form as they reported that 14 per cent of all bets for outright glory have been on Rory McIlroy, who stormed to a seven-shot victory at the Canadian Open last week.

McIlroy has missed the last three US Open cuts but that was the tenth tournament in 12 outings this season in which the man from Northern Ireland has claimed a top-ten finish.

The Players champion is 9-1 with Betway and Hills to repeat his success at Congressional in 2011 and claim his fifth Major crown.

Betfred are 10-1 that Brooks Koepka, who won last month's US PGA Championship at Bethpage Black, can win his third successive US Open.
