Final day preview

Europe lost their narrow lead in a brutal rain-and-wind-lashed day at chilly Gleneagles and the teams are locked at 8-8 thanks to a thrilling fourball fightback by 2018 British Open champion Georgia Hall and Celine Boutier.

They turned a four-hole deficit after seven holes to a much-needed victory over Angel Yin and Ally McDonald, winning the last five holes, the lone Europe success of the afternoon.

The Americans won the session by 2.5-1.5 after the morning foursomes had been shared 2-2. It was the first session the Americans have won and makes them warm favourites to make it three Solheims in a row under the astute captaincy of all-time-great Juli Inkster.

It could have been much worse for Europe as the visitors led in all four matches at one stage.
The current match score leaves all to play for in today’s 12 singles, the first of which tees off at 11.40am.

As holders the USA need only six points to retain the trophy. Europe need 6.5 to snatch it back, having last won in Colorado in 2013.

Traditionally, the singles usually favour the Americans because they have the higher-ranked golfers but they are far from unbeatable with six rookies in the side.

Of the nine Solheim Cups played this century, Europe have won the singles three times, at Barseback, Killeen Castle and Colorado, so all is not lost for Catriona Matthew’s battlers.

They would be going into Sunday with a handy lead if Van Dam and Pettersen had not both bogeyed the par-five 16th and if Masson had not missed the 6ft birdie putt at the last that would have given her and partner Ewart Shadoff victory.

The weather is not forecast to be anywhere near as unpleasant for the singles - no rain, less wind but cold with a maximum temperature of 13C.

Whatever happens, Racing Post Sport followers who backed the 9-5 outsiders have had a terrific run for their money.

The home side are now much the same price now as when they started (best at 2-1) with the USA a top-price 8-11 and the dead-heat 8-1, shorter than pre-tournament.

USA to win the singles 6.5-5.5, Europe by the same one-point margin and the 6-6 tie are the three outcomes to focus on.

Europe’s Hall and Boutier, both 3-0-0, are the only players on either side to have a 100 per cent record and if Europe are to win, they will probably have to make it four.
