Man City v Tottenham form

Pep Guardiola said his Manchester City side were "sloppy" despite beating West Ham 5-0 at the London Stadium so it's frightening to imagine what might happen to opponents once the champions hit top gear.

City have won their last 15 Premier League matches, with Crystal Palace the last team to avoid defeat at the Etihad back on December 22 when the Eagles soared to a remarkable 3-2 success.

Tottenham opened their Premier League campaign with a deserved 3-1 success over Aston Villa, although they had to come from behind after conceding early on to John McGinn.

All three home goals came in the final 17 minutes with debutant Tanguy Ndombele equalising before Harry Kane scored twice to send the Spurs supporters home happy.

Man City v Tottenham team news

Leroy Sane and Benjamin Mendy are missing for the men from Manchester, who also need to check on the fitness of Fernandinho and new signing Joao Cancelo.

Heung-Min Son and Juan Foyth are suspended and Tottenham are also without the injured Dele Alli and Ryan Sessegnon. Ben Davies is doubtful and Giovani Lo Celso's match fitness needs to be assessed.

Man City v Tottenham tactical battle

City's all-conquering style is set in stone with Rodri's economical passing making him perfectly suited to filling in for Fernandinho and in the attacking positions Guardiola has an embarrassment of riches – Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero were only substitutes last week.

How Spurs try to tame the treble winners will be interesting, although, whatever the formation, their goalscorers from the dramatic away-goal success over City in last season's Champions League quarter-final are unavailable to Mauricio Pochettino. Two-goal Son is suspended and Fernando Llorente has departed the club.

Pochettino used a diamond in the first half against Villa but the side looked far more comfortable in the 4-2-3-1 used in the second half.

The introduction of wantaway Christian Eriksen was the catalyst for the improvement but the Dane is not certain to start and the same is true of the dropped Jan Vertonghen following reports of a minor bust-up with his manager.

Man City v Tottenham betting verdict

City are short-priced favourites and deservedly so. The best bet could be to take them to be leading at half-time and full-time, something they achieved at home to all of the big six last season and in both Etihad meetings against Tottenham. City to win 3-1.

Man City v Tottenham key stats

  • Man City have won five of the last six games against Tottenham
  • The 1-0 Champions League loss at Spurs is the only time City have failed to triumph in their last 18 fixtures
  • Seven of the ten goals in the four meetings last season were scored in the first half
  • Spurs have lost nine of their last 11 away matches
