The form is fresh but the players are shattered and that should allow Manchester City to take swift revenge for their Champions League exit against Tottenham by beating the same opponents at the same venue to return to the top of the Premier League.

Nobody with an interest in either camp can have fully recovered, emotionally or physically from events at the Etihad on Wednesday when ecstasy turned to despair for City on an injury-time VAR offside call and the opposite was true for Spurs.

It was the kind of up-and-down rollercoaster ride suitable only for adrenaline junkies and it's worth sparing a thought for Moussa Sissoko, Tottenham's injured midfielder, who stormed off down the tunnel as Raheem Sterling netted.

He remained in the dressing room for several minutes until a member of the coaching staff came to pass on the good news, although his probable absence is just one reason for believing this match could come too soon for the Londoners.

Mauricio Pochettino can only look on with envy at City's squad depth when his own bench featured youngsters Juan Foyth, Olivier Skipp and Kyle Walker-Peters compared to Pep Guardiola's options of Gabriel Jesus, Leroy Sane, Fernandinho, Nicolas Otamendi, Riyad Mahrez and John Stones.

The Champions League exit finished City's quadruple dreams but the Premier League champions are still favourites for the Premier League title and deservedly beat Spurs 4-3 despite elimination on away goals.

Kevin De Bruyne was magnificent in midweek, assisting three goals and building on his equally exceptional performance in Sunday's 3-1 success over Crystal Palace, which suggests he could have a major influence on the remainder of the campaign.

De Bruyne's passing brings the best out of Sterling, who scored twice at Selhurst and matched that effort against a Spurs side who possess pace on the break through Heung-Min Son and Lucas Moura, but are desperately short of midfield options.

Sissoko is a major doubt, Eric Dier has started just one Premier League match since December and Harry Winks is definitely out.

Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen, who was so close to being the villain of the piece on Wednesday, lack defensive responsibility and Victor Wanyama was out on his feet long before the full-time whistle.

That match was City's 23rd victory in their last 26 fixtures and they have won 20 of their last 21 at the Etihad. It was not good enough to stay on track for the quadruple but it should be to beat Spurs with something to spare.
