Match preview

Bournemouth have offered little resistance in four defeats since the Premier League restarted and their relegation fight may become even more desperate with a home defeat to Tottenham.

The Cherries have been beaten to nil in meetings with Crystal Palace and Wolves and readily picked off by Newcastle and Manchester United in respective 4-1 and 5-2 defeats.

Bournemouth have registered just five shots on target in those four matches combined and are in danger of going down with a whimper having collected only one point from the last 24 available.

Eddie Howe’s side have four points to make up on Watford and West Ham, the two sides just outside the relegation places, but the fixture list isn’t getting any easier and it is no surprise that bookmakers rate them as short as 1-14 for the drop.

After their tussle with Tottenham, Bournemouth’s remaining four games see them host Leicester and Southampton while travelling to take on Manchester City and Everton.

That adds extra importance to this showdown with Spurs and although they are boosted in attack through Callum Wilson’s return from suspension, they have not shown enough to suggest they have the talent elsewhere to claim a positive result.

Howe’s men have lost 17 of their last 22 league fixtures, leaking 46 goals in that period, and their lack of belief should be punished by a Tottenham team who may feel they have a point to prove under manager Jose Mourinho.

Spurs have had a mixed start since the season resumed, holding Manchester United to a 1-1 draw and recording wins to nil over Everton and West Ham either side of a 3-1 defeat at Sheffield United.

Just three wins from 16 road fixtures is another cause for concern but there are few away-days as appealing as the trip to Bournemouth at present and with Harry Kane firing again with two goals in three games they are fancied to come out on top.

The bust-up between Heung-Min Son and captain Hugo Lloris in Monday’s 1-0 win over Everton may show some signs of agitation in Tottenham’s ranks but Mourinho relished seeing that passion and that is more fight than Bournemouth have displayed in their scrap for survival.

Key stat

Bournemouth have lost their last five Premier League games.
