Wales went into the final month of Euro 2020 qualifying knowing automatic qualification was out of their control but the picture changed dramatically over the weekend and they are worthy odds-on favourites to seal a top-two finish in Group E by defeating Hungary in Cardiff.

It looks a case of winner-takes-all in the Welsh capital because the draw would open the door for Slovakia to climb from fourth place to second with a home victory over basement boys Azerbaijan.

There is a slim chance Hungary could progress with a point, but they will not be placing much faith in the Azeris, who have picked up just one point in seven matches.

The situation should lend itself to an open entertaining game and that should suit the hosts, who have better attacking players.

However, it may take more than one goal to get the job done because Wales look inexperienced in defence with starting centre-backs Tom Lockyer and Chris Mepham capped just nine times each.

Wales were comfortable when cruising to a 2-0 success away to Azerbaijan on Saturday but they must expect a sterner test against the Hungarians, who have made steady progress in recent years.

Hungary's qualification for Euro 2016 ended a 30-year exile from major tournament finals and they have picked up some decent results in Euro 2020 qualifying, winning 2-1 at home to Croatia and 1-0 at home to Wales.

They have been less successful on their travels and that will have to change if they are to retain second place.

Hungary are approaching the game with an attacking mindset but that increases the pressure on a defence severely weakened by absentees.

Dynamo Kiev defender Tamas Kadar and RB Leipzig centre-back Willi Orban have withdrawn from the squad with injuries and regular left-back Mihaly Korhut serves a one-game ban after collecting three yellow cards.

Zsolt Nagy, who plies his trade for Puskas Akademia in the Hungarian top flight, is the only natural left-back available to head coach Marco Rossi and made his international debut as a substitute in Friday's 2-1 friendly defeat at home to Uruguay.

If he gets the nod against Wales he faces the massive challenge of keeping tabs on Gareth Bale.

On the opposite flank, Dan James will be looking to build on his hugely impressive performance against Azerbaijan.

Bale and James are the box-office attractions for Wales but Hungary also need to be aware of the threat of Wigan centre-forward Kieffer Moore, who has emerged as a key player in recent months.

Moore was a surprise selection for Wales's trip to Slovakia in October but scored a superb headed goal in a 1-1 draw.

He kept his place in the side and popped up with the opening goal of the weekend win in Azerbaijan.

The powerful striker seems undaunted by the international stage and should continue to thrive thanks to the excellent service he receives.

He looks an obvious danger to an understrength Hungary defence and is overpriced to net the first goal.
