Match preview

Northern Ireland's slim chances of automatic qualification for Euro 2020 ended with a 0-0 draw at home to Holland and they may struggle add to their points or goal tallies when they face Group C leaders Germany in Frankfurt.

There is no disgrace at all in Northern Ireland finishing third but they may look back with a few regrets.

Josh Magennis's 75th-minute goal gave them a 1-0 lead over Holland in Rotterdam last month before the hosts responded with three late goals.

And another golden opportunity to beat the Dutch was squandered in Belfast on Saturday when Steven Davis blazed a first-half penalty over the bar.

However, it should be remembered that Michael O'Neill's men been up against two teams with vastly superior resources and they have done well to compete as well as they have.

Northern Ireland got to half-time at 0-0 in both matches against the Dutch and were also level at the break in their 2-0 September loss at home to Germany.

However, they have found it impossible to maintain the tempo and might have lost all three games had the Dutch needed more than a single point to seal their passage to the finals.

While Holland were happy to settle for a draw, Germany will be going all out for a victory to ensure they finish top of the group.

Joachim Low's side are playing for their seeding in the Euro 2020 finals draw as they could currently be in pot one or two, and to gain a measure of revenge over the Dutch, who finished above them in last year's Nations League.

Germany have something to prove after failing to get past the group stage at World Cup 2018 and are behind France, England and Belgium in the Euro 2020 betting.

But Low's youthful squad (only Manuel Neuer is over 30) are showing signs of improvement and seem to be getting to grips with the defensive problems which have plagued them in recent years.

They have kept clean sheets in five of their last six competitive games and can sign off with a shutout against Northern Ireland.

Key stat
