Promotion is the target for Nottingham Forest this season and if they go close they will be competitive on the handicap.

Bookmakers give the Tricky Trees a head start on almost half the division and that could be a mistake because Forest have built a team to contend for the top positions.

They have made steady progress over the last three seasons, amassing tallies of 51, 53 and 66 points and have scope to take big strides forward over the next nine months.

Their manager Sabri Lamouchi is new to the Sky Bet Championship but he knows what he wants and has wasted no time in reshaping the squad to his liking.

His desire to play a more expansive game has been articulated by the signings of creative midfielder Tiago Silva as well as wingers Sammy Ameobi and Albert Adomah.

Forest supporters are likely to enjoy the ride which could end with elevation to the Premier League for the first time since 1999.

Recently relegated clubs have the advantage of parachute payments and that may partly explain how Fulham were able to persuade star striker Aleksandar Mitrovic to sign a new five-year-contract.

Mitrovic is the headline act in a star-studded Cottagers attack featuring loan signings Ivan Cavaleiro and Anthony Knockaert.

They look serious contenders for the title and, if successful, they won't be far away on the handicap.
