Chile v Uruguay

Premier Sports 1, midnight Monday night

Defending champions Chile are top of Copa America Group C after banking six points from six but they could be knocked off their perch by Uruguay, who are the likelier winners at the Maracana.

Uruguay stated the tournament with a 4-0 victory over Ecuador but they seemed to lack full focus when drawing 2-2 with Japan on Friday.

It was a game Uruguay should have won - they bossed the shot count 25 to 11 - and that may have given them a timely reminder that they cannot allow their standards to slip.

Uruguay have built a reputation as a tough team to play against and their wily manager Oscar Tabarez will urge his players to get back to basics.

At the 2018 World Cup they were often criticised for a laboured style of play but they churned out four successive victories before succumbing 2-0 to France in the quarter-finals.

Chile failed to qualify for the World Cup and were unfancied for the Copa America despite lifting the trophy in 2015 and 2016.

They have breezed through to the quarter-finals with victories over Japan (4-0) and Ecuador (2-1) but a first defeat looks likely against Uruguay, who finished four places above them in World Cup qualifying.

Recommendation
Uruguay
1pt 11-10 general

Ecuador v Japan

Premier Sports 2, midnight Monday night

Everything has gone wrong for Ecuador, who have suffered two defeats and had two players sent off, but they can sign off Group C with a victory over Japan in Belo Horizonte.

Right-back Jose Quintero was dismissed in the 23rd minute of Ecuador's 4-0 loss to Uruguay and defender Gabriel Achilier received his marching orders towards the end of Friday's 2-1 loss to Chile.

However, Ecuador were competitive against Chile, narrowly losing the shot count ten to seven, and if they continue to improve they may be too strong for a youthful Japan side missing most the players who represented them at the 2018 World Cup.

Japan have improved, responding to a 4-0 loss to Chile with a 2-2 draw against Uruguay, and are still in with a chance of reaching the knockout stage.

However, they were fortunate to get their point against Uruguay having conceded 29 shots, ten of them on target.

Goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima, one of their few experienced players, can expect another busy night and may not be able to stem the flow of goals.

Ecuador won their final group matches at the 2015 and 2016 Copa America's and they can continue the trend by seeing off the Japanese.

Recommendation
Ecuador
1pt 5-4 general
