Newcastle v Borussia Dortmund predictions

Not many would have had Group F as the joint lowest-scoring section after two rounds of Champions League action but Newcastle and Dortmund can change the script by laying on a goal-laden thriller at St James's Park.

Just seven goals have been mustered in the opening four matches of the campaign, and Dortmund – alongside Milan – are yet to get off the mark.

That in itself is a surprise given the freedom with which the German side play but they can break their duck on Tyneside in what promises to be a really entertaining affair.

Eddie Howe's men certainly won't be changing their approach any time soon which means piling up chances and showing no fear, just as was the case last time out when they drubbed Paris Saint-Germain 4-1.

They have scored 17 goals in six home Premier League and European matches this term culminating in Saturday's 4-0 romp against Crystal Palace.

Since they kicked off their Group F program with a gutsy, disciplined 0-0 draw in Milan, they have banged in 21 goals in six matches.

Howe knows that if Newcastle win their two remaining home ties they will have one foot in the last 16 and he will be aware that pending trips to Dortmund and Paris will not be easy.

So Newcastle can be expected to get on the front foot from the off in the pursuit of a win, but there is no way Dortmund will sit back, either.

Edin Terzic's men are also flying with just one defeat in 11 this season – 2-0 at PSG in Europe – and once again look a side who will be in the thick of a title challenge in Germany.

It has taken time for Niclas Fullkrug to get up to speed since his deadline-day switch from Bremen but with four goals in his last six games for club and country he is finding his way at the top of Terzic's front four - or three depending on shape.

Old hands such as Mats Hummels, Marco Reus and Emre Can are playing as well as ever and Dutch winger Donyell Malen is turning into a threat who will occupy Newcastle's left flank.

Dortmund's record in England isn't great and last season they lost at both Manchester City and Chelsea in this competition.

But they are still firing off plenty of shots on goal in the Bundesliga – only Bayern Munich and Leverkusen unload more – and with only one point on the board they need to be positive.

Backing both teams to score and over 2.5 goals flies in the face of what we've seen in Group F but the attacking instincts of these sides should yield a spectacular show at some point.

As for the match, Newcastle will feel pretty much invincible right now on their eight-game unbeaten streak and their dismantling of PSG was a real eye-opener. They are short enough, however.
