Tour of Flanders 2022 preview

Undoubtedly the highlight of the Belgian cycling season, the 106th edition of the Tour of Flanders could be something special.

After the eerie quiet of 2020 and 2021, crowds will be back by the roadside and are sure to produce an electric atmosphere.

Their presence will be most notable on the climbs of Oude Kwaremon and the Paterberg. Both feature multiple times in the race and could provide a decisive one-two punch before the final 13km run into Oudenaarde.

Reigning champion Kasper Asgreen prepared for his 'De Ronde' success by winning E3 Saxo Bank Classic and there was talk of a repeat as soon as Wout van Aert claimed the honours in Harelbeke last Friday.

However, illness puts his participation in doubt, perhaps opening the door to the man he edged out, Team Jumbo–Visma colleague Christophe Laporte.

Runner-up 12 months ago and Wednesday's Dwars door Vlaanderen champion Mathieu van der Poel is also a contender but it could pay to follow Tadej Pogacar.

The Slovenian's sensational 2021 form has carried into this year and he finished tenth on Wednesday after missing the winning move.

If Pogacar gets his tactics right, it will take a mighty ride to stop him adding another win to his tally.
