American a deserving winner against Wozniacki in opener

There has been plenty of money for Qiang Wang to reach the quarter-finals of the Strasbourg International with a last-16 victory over Shelby Rogers but if the American plays to her potential then she is perfectly entitled to extend her stay in the Alsace region.

There was little surprise in Rogers upsetting top seed Caroline Wozniacki in their opener – the Dane retired when trailing 7-6 1-0 – and punters should not forget the selection reached the last eight of the French Open last year.

Wang is learning pretty fast herself but the Chinese player, while often competitive in her homeland events, has yet to stage a breakthrough on the world map in the way her compatriots Na Li, Shuai Peng and, to an extent, Shuai Zhang did.

That could come, of course, but it's a little surprising to see Wang being punted strongly, notwithstanding the fact that the world number 50 is ranked five spots above Rogers.

Eurosport 2, who are showing daily live French Open qualifying action from 9am, are also screening action from the Geneva Open from today.

Albert Ramos-Vinolas was advised ante-post to lift the Swiss title this year, but the Spaniard looks remarkably easy to back for his opener at 3-4 with his opponent Andrey Kuznetsov having been supported.

John Isner, semi-finalist in the Italian International Masters Series event last week, may not be the same animal in Geneva this week and Mischa Zverev, his opening opponent, could offer the American a stern test after ousting Robin Haase 5-7 7-6 6-3.
