Albert Ramos-Vinolas broke into the top 20 for the first time in his career after his heroics in Monte Carlo and the Spaniard, galvanized by home support, should be too strong for Diego Schwartzman in his Madrid curtain-raiser.

Ramos-Vinolas reached the final in Monte Carlo only to be outgunned by his dominant compatriot Rafael Nadal before forcing world number one Andy Murray to a deciding set in his quarter-final defeat at Barcelona.

The Spaniard is showing a new sense of adventure and if he arrives in a similar vein he is expected to outclass Schwartzman, who has lost in straight sets to Marin Cilic, Robin Haase, and Nadal within the last month.

The improving Argentinian is very much respected on his favoured terrain, highlighted by last week’s semi-final berth in Turkey, but he can often come up short against more seasoned campaigners.

Laura Siegemund claimed a number of leading scalps en route to lifting last week’s Stuttgart Open but she may come unstuck against Coco Vandeweghe in her second-round tussle in Madrid.

The German thrives on clay and a reproduction of her opening-round win over Briton Johanna Konta would make her tough to thwart. However, it could be worth chancing Vandeweghe, who has more raw talent and reached the last four of this year’s Australian Open.
