Grand Slam champ can foil all-Williams final

Australian Open champ Angelique Kerber had to be at her Grand Slam-winning best to see off the challenge of Simona Halep on Tuesday and she is quoted at 4-9 to beat five-time Wimbledon winner Venus Williams when they meet for a place in Saturday’s final.

Kerber’s 7-5 7-6 victory over Halep featured 13 breaks of serve as both women struggled to hold but that statistic had plenty to do with the quality of the returns coming from the rackets of the players.

If Kerber – who won 50 per cent of all points on the Halep serve – resumes in the same form today then she is likely to put Venus under pressure from the start and the 8-13 available about the German getting the first break of serve could appeal.
