Day four: England win thriller by one wicket

Scorecard from Headingley

Thirty eight years on from Ian Botham's Headingley Ashes heroics, Ben Stokes heaved England over the line for a miraculous one-wicket victory over Australia in Leeds to level the series at 1-1 with two Tests to play.

Stokes slammed 135 not out to take the hosts to a record victory target of 359, having been bowled out for 67 in their first innings.

England were 4-9 favourites at lunch, having lost only one wicket in the morning session.

However, their in-play odds hit 25-1 when Stokes was joined at the crease by number 11 Jack Leach with 76 runs still needed after the Baggy Greens took five quick wickets in the post-lunch session.

Tim Paine's Australia missed chances to win the game when England were still two runs short of their target.

First, Nathan Lyon failed to break the stumps at the bowler's end after with Leach halfway down the track. Then, a confident Lyon appeal for lbw against Stokes was turned down and Australia had no reviews left.

Bet365 make England 11-8 to reclaim the urn by winning the series, which moves on to Manchester on Wednesday week, with Australia and a drawn series both available at 2-1.

Day four: lunch report

Headingley has witnessed some spectacular Ashes feats over the years and England kept alive their dream of a remarkable victory over Australia with a disciplined batting display on the fourth morning.

The tourists, chasing a colossal target of 359, reached the interval at 238-4 and they are just 4-9 to complete their highest successful run-chase in a Test match.

Things didn't start well for England, who were 7-4 at the end of day three, as skipper Joe Root added only two runs to his overnight 75 before being caught at slip off Nathan Lyon.

But Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow came together for an unbroken stand of 79 as Australia's odds were eased to 7-4 by the interval.

England had hit 12-1 in-play after being reduced to 15-2 on Saturday but Stokes and Bairstow negotiated the second new ball well and bookmakers expect the hosts to write a new chapter in the Ashes history books by nailing a record fourth-innings chase.

Day three: close of play report

England are 7-4 to win the third Ashes Test at Headingley after finishing day three at 156-3 in pursuit of an imposing victory target of 359.

That represented a significant improvement after being bowled out for 67 in the first innings but Australia remain in a strong position and they are 4-9 to take a 2-0 lead in the series with two Tests remaining.

England started their run-chase trading at odds of 5-1 but were soon out to 12-1 after openers Rory Burns and Jason Roy were dismissed cheaply. However, captain Joe Root and Joe Denly (50) shared a stand of 126 to keep the hosts in the hunt and Root will resume on 75 not out.

Bet365 make the skipper 4-7 to reach his century and 13-10 to score 120 or more. Ben Stokes, two not out after facing 50 balls, is 5-2 to score a fifty.

Day three: lunch report

Australia are 1-6 to retain the Ashes urn by winning the third Test at Headingley after making 246 in their second innings to set England 359 for victory and the Three Lions were 11-0 when the teams left the field for third day's first break.

Marnus Labuschagne top scored for the Baggy Greens with 80, before being run out, to make it three Test fifties in three Test knocks and it was another brave effort after being hit on this helmet twice in the morning, including a snorter to the grille from Jofra Archer during a spell of searching short-bowling.

England are 5-1 shots to level the series while the draw is as big as 310-1 with two more sunny days forecast for Leeds.

Day two: close of play report

England started Friday's second day of the third Ashes Test at Headingley as 2-7 favourites but by close of play they were trading at 4-1 as Australia took control of the match.

Having been bowled out for 179 on a rain-affected first day, the Aussies rolled over England for just 67 with Josh Hazlewood (5-30) leading the way.

England captain Joe Root had a day to forget, bagging a second pair in a row and dropping a catch, and 8-1 shot Joe Denly top-scored with 12.

Australia, 7-2 after their underwhelming batting display on Thursday, go into day three at 1-6 to take a 2-0 lead in the series with two matches remaining.

They made a decent fist of their second innings, reaching 171-6 to extend their lead over the hosts to 283. Their runs line is 237.5 with bet365 and Marnus Labuschagne, unbeaten on 53 after his first-innings 74, is 9-2 with Sky Bet to score a maiden Test century.

Day two: lunch report

Australia started the second day of the third Test as 7-2 shots for victory but they are just 4-7 at lunch after roaring back into the contest thanks to a blistering bowling display.

England, whose opening runs line was around 285.5, limped to the interval at 54-6 as Aussie quicks Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and James Pattinson ripped through the home top order.

Some loose shots contributed to England's collapse and David Warner held on to four catches in the slips and wicketkeeper Tim Paine pouched two chances.

England had been trading at 2-7 after bowling Australia out for 179 on a rain-affected first day of the Leeds Test but they find themselves in deep trouble after yet another batting failure.

Joe Denly (12) was the only top-six batsman to reach double figures and skipper Joe Root was out for his second successive duck.

Root's men are 6-4 to win the Test and Betfred quote their first-innings runs line at 140.5. With bowlers well and truly on top, the draw is out to 50-1.

Australia, who lead the five-match series 1-0 after two Tests, are 4-9 to win the series.

Day one: close of play report

England are 2-7 to win the third Ashes Test after bowling Australia out for 179 on a rain-affected first day at Headingley.

Australia, without Steve Smith who was ruled out with concussion, lost two wickets for 25 before out-of-form David Warner (61) and Marnus Labuschagne (74) steadied the ship to guide them to 136-3.

But beyond that pair, Tim Paine’s men were short of ideas and paceman Jofra Archer played a starring role with figures of 6-45.

The Aussies are out to 7-2 to take a 2-0 lead in the series, having started the day as 9-4 outsiders.

Day one: lunch report

England were cut to 1-2 to win the Third Ashes Test after making an early breakthrough at Headingley on day one.

Jofra Archer picked up where he left off from the second Test, dismissing opener Marcus Harris for eight in the fourth over, leaving Australia on 12-1.

A rain delay forced an early lunch in Leeds, where Tim Paine's men are now as big as 11-4 to win and take a 2-0 lead in the series.

David Warner has endured a frustrating first two Test matches and is yet to get off the mark at the crease, where he will be joined by Usman Khawaja when play resumes.
