England are 6-4 to win the Ashes after Ben Stokes’s sensational innings of 135 not out hauled them to a thrilling one-wicket victory over Australia at Headingley.

Scorecard from Headingley

Chasing 359, England’s in-play odds hit 25-1 when Stokes was joined by last man Jack Leach with 73 runs still required in Leeds.

But Australia couldn’t find a way to break the tenth-wicket partnership, fluffing a run-out chance and seeing an lbw shout against Stokes turned down before England’s World Cup final hero inked himself into Ashes folklore by hitting the winning runs in their highest successful Test chase.

It capped an astonishing comeback from England, who had been bowled out for 67 in their first innings and reduced to 15-2 second time around.

They were out to 12-1 in-play after losing both openers and started the fourth day as 7-4 shots for victory before Joe Root’s dismissal for 77 dented their chances.

But Stokes, 11-1 to be man of the match, continued his dream summer and Paddy Power have paid out on him being named BBC Sports Personality of the Year. Bet365 and Betway make him 1-4 for the award.

Australia are 9-4 to win the series with the draw 2-1 and they hope to welcome back batsman Steve Smith when the fourth Test starts at Old Trafford on September 4.
