Game three preview

The Washington Nationals have made an incredible start to the World Series, winning the first two matches in the best-of-seven series against the Houston Astros, and they are odds-on to win their first Fall Classic.

After they edged out the Astros 5-4 in the opener, the second game on Wednesday night was 2-2 going into the seventh inning when the Nationals ran riot, scoring six runs and chasing pitcher Justin Verlander from the game. They ended as comfortable 12-3 winners.

After a rest day the action now moves to the American capital, and the Nationals will be hoping to win two of the three games in front of their own fans to avoid having to return to Houston next week.

The pitching of starters Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasbourg has been the foundation for Washington’s incredible start, and the good news for the Astros is that they will not be facing either of them on Friday night.

The bad news is that Anibal Sanchez takes to the mound and he has also had a terrific post-season, with a playoff Earned Run Average of 0.71 in his two starts, although his regular-season ERA of 3.85 was less impressive.

Houston will counter with Zack Greinke who, in contrast, had a great regular season (2.93 ERA) but a disappointing post-season (6.43).

In terms of punting, the oddsmakers appear to have all bases covered.
