Held up in rear, outpaced 3 out, tenderly handled but kept on from 2 out, no telling impression (inquiry into running and riding; jockey said his instructions were to drop in to allow him to get into a rhythm and hopefully jump with more fluency having jumped erratically on its previous 2 runs over hurdles, explaing that despite settling nicely, the gelding was still novicey at the first couple of hurdles and as a result found himself further detached than he had intended, mindful that the front runner has a tendency to go hard in front and wanting his mount to finish out his race, he elected to take time to find his rhythm and try to creep into the race and so was happy with his position at the back of the main bunch of runners rounding the bend after the winning post. Further explained that the gelding made a mistake at the last flight in the back straight prompting him to give it a nudge along, to which the horse responded, gaining some ground whilst trying to keep the gelding balanced on the downhill. Once in the home straight he began to ask for effort but, having made a mistake at the 2nd last felt it best to hold the gelding together to negotiate the final flight and thereafter could only plug on at the same pace passing tiring horses and had, in his opinion, obtained the best possible placing; trainer's rep confirmed the instructions and his satisfaction with the ride, which was noted; vet had nothing to report) (op 25/1)
