Took keen hold, in rear, not fluent 3rd, headway and went fourth before 2 out, kept on well home straight, never near to challenge (inquiry held into running and riding of gelding, which was held up in rear of field before being asked for an effort from approaching 2 out to finish fourth of eight runners beaten 25 3/4l; jockey stated that his instructions were to drop gelding in to help him settle as he had run too free on his previous runs; he explained that after jumping off, gelding became lit up and keen as another runner who was also running free had sat on his girths; he added that as race developed three of the runners went off at a strong gallop leaving rest of field slightly detached; he said that gelding had continued to run keen, a fact he reported at scales, and jump novicey throughout 1st circuit; he explained that as field headed down back straight, he began asking his mount to improve on leaders; he further added that gelding was plugging on one paced in home straight without making any ground on winner or second and was only gaining on third placed runner who he believed had weakened significantly in straight; he felt confident that his mount had obtained best possible placing in the circumstances; trainer confirmed instructions and that he was satisfied with ride) (op 300/1)
