ch g Dr Fong (USA) - Evening Promise (Aragon)
Chased leaders, 9th 3 out, kept on one pace from next (jockey said, regarding running and riding, that his orders were to hold onto the gelding as long as he could in order that it saw out the trip better than it did in its two previous hurdles; it did not travel on the ground early and may improve when encountering a sounder surface, he held onto it for as long as he could, and it saw out the trip well enough; it jumped adequately and he did not use the whip as he was instructed not to as it had shown a reluctance when hit in the past, he felt that if he got at it earlier it may not have got home; in hindsight if he had ridden stronger with hands and heels after the last, it may have finished a place closer, no more; he added gelding made a respiratory noise after the last; trainer confirmed instructions and said he was worried about running gelding on softer ground; he also said gelding has worn blinkers in the past but he wanted it to see the hurdles today so he left them off; he may put them on again in the future; he said his next plan for gelding is to run it on the flat at Leopardstown where hopefully it would encounter better ground) (op 66/1)
