Yee-haw! Phillip Enright makes a cowboy-like recovery to win on Surf
A name like Surf Instructor hinted at excitement and that is what Phillip Enright got as he staged a stunning recovery to win at Limerick on Thursday.
The rider was tossed several feet in the air like a rodeo rider when 9-2 chance Surf Instructor made a shuddering error at the last fence that looked to have cost him any chance in the 2m1½f novice chase.
But somehow Enright clung on after bouncing back into the saddle and then, just as incredibly, having lost his irons, rallied the Henry de Bromhead-trained five-year-old to get past Ballela Boy and Balbir Du Mathan.
Enright said: "He jumped very well throughout. He winged the second-last and I thought I had a chance coming to the last, but he banked it for some reason.
“Thankfully someone was looking down on me and gave me a push back into the saddle. It wasn't until he made the mistake at the last that he got going. It felt very close to being gone.
“If he had gone left or right I definitely would have been gone, but thankfully he kept straight and we had luck on our side."
Surf Instructor, having his second start over fences, was matched at 230 on Betfair after his last-fence mistake.
