William Buick strikes on first ride after lengthy injury layoff
William Buick made a successful return from injury at Newmarket on Friday when winning on his first ride since May.
Buick, riding for Godolphin and Charlie Appleby, didn't have to work hard on his return as Lazuli, the 11-10 favourite, breezed to an effortless success in the 6f novice.
The Godolphin rider had been sidelined with post head-injury syndrome which was sustained after a fall on the way to the start at Ascot 12 weeks ago. The symptoms did not develop for more than 24 hours as Buick completed a full book of rides the next day and rode a winner.
Appleby was full of praise for how Buick has handled his return from the lengthy layoff and, speaking on Racing TV, said: "He's a vital part of the team and we are delighted to have him back. William is a very professional sportsman and it's not just about today – it's about the future."
Buick said: "I'm in a fortunate position to be riding nice horses and I'm thankful for all the support."
The rider, who was out of luck with his second ride on the Newmarket card, enjoyed global success last year, winning at the highest level in Britain, Ireland, Dubai, France, Hong Kong, Japan and the USA.
