Even after the fairly unsatisfactory Queen Anne, you would have got long odds against the milers being the saviours of this compressed season.

They are the leaders on the road now, with a proxy war taking place for champion miler honours between the two biggest revelations of the campaign.

Although Palace Pier beat Circus Maximus by much further than Mohaather, both are now on the same rating of 127. The extremely testing ground at Deauville on Sunday both elongated winning margins and blunted plenty of the field.
