Audarya could be the one to beat again at Del Mar in November

One of the highlights of last season was James Fanshawe's joyous victory in the Breeders' Cup at Keeneland.

His Audarya had done nothing but improve all year and she was a game winner of the Filly & Mare Turf.

And the mare's five-year-old campaign promises to be just as exciting judged on a most encouraging return in the Prince of Wales's Stakes.

She had a stiff task against the top-class Love, who dictated just a fair pace, and was keen early on as she returned from a seven-month break, yet she found plenty in the final furlong and was beaten just three-quarters of a length.

Audarya always progresses with racing and this career-best reappearance augurs well for another Breeders' Cup tilt at Del Mar in the autumn.

Gavin Cromwell is a man for all seasons

Never underestimate anything Gavin Cromwell sends across to Britain, whatever the race, whatever the code.

Jumps fans have been well aware of what he can do for a while. Anyone who can win the Welsh Grand National with the 13-year-old Raz De Maree clearly knows what he is doing and Cheltenham triumphs in the Champion Hurdle (Espoir D'Allen) and Stayers' Hurdle (Flooring Porter) have proved the point.

Cromwell's stylish success with Quick Suzy – one of just six two-year-olds in his County Meath yard – showed the trainer has to be feared in Group races on the Flat as well.

Back-end all-weather form can be stronger than you think

Any shrewdie who followed the principals in the unheralded Fleur De Lys Fillies' Stakes at Lingfield a couple of days before Halloween last year has been handsomely rewarded.

Third-placed Ummalnar bolted up at 100-30 in another Listed event at Dundalk the following month and runner-up Lavender's Blue made a successful return at 3-1 in the Listed Snowdrop Fillies' Stakes at Kempton this spring.

And on Wednesday the winner Indie Angel underlined the strength of the form by coming good at the third attempt this season to triumph in the Group 2 Duke of Cambridge Stakes at 22-1.

Don't get carried away with ground worries

Neither Kemari nor Quick Suzy had ever raced on a fast surface but that did not stop either of them.

Real World had never even run on turf before, yet he bolted up in the Royal Hunt Cup.

Chris Stickels and his team do a fine job preparing the track and conditions usually mean the best horse at the weights wins. Unless it rains . . .
