Veracious and Threat set to spearhead Cheveley Park team at Glorious Goodwood

Cheveley Park Stud's Veracious, who floored fellow fillies to land her biggest win in Friday's Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket, is set to take on colts for the first time in the Qatar Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood on July 31.

The four-year-old, who is trained by Sir Michael Stoute, has the option of the Qatar Nassau Stakes at Goodwood but her camp is keen to stick to a mile, which means facing males in the historic Sussex Stakes.

A fine third in last year's Nassau, the four-year-old is as big as 20-1 for the Sussex with Betfair and Paddy Power.

Chris Richardson, who manages Cheveley Park Stud for the Thompson family, said on Sunday: "I believe Mr Thompson has spoken to Sir Michael this morning and the intention is to contest the Sussex.

"I know a few people have slightly knocked Veracious, but she's continued to improve with racing during the year from what we've seen. I think her fourth in the Duke of Cambridge at Royal Ascot was a good performance. She probably just did a bit too much, but that's her wont.

"We've always believed in her 100 per cent and were thrilled she pulled it out of the bag on Friday."

Oisin Murphy partnered Veracious in the Falmouth and is in the mix to be on board again.

"He'd be a strong favourite, but that's a decision to take," added Richardson as he took in the cricket World Cup final between England and New Zealand. "Personally, I'd feel very comfortable with that."

Cheveley Park has had five winners from its last 15 runners and the Richard Hannon-trained Coventry Stakes second Threat could help maintain the purple patch by running in Goodwood's Qatar Vintage Stakes.

"We'd like to run him over seven furlongs as he did his best towards the end of the Coventry," Richardson said. "We're never keen to run them back too quickly from Royal Ascot to the July meeting, hence why we bypassed that.

"We wanted to give him a bit of extra time and he's run two good races off a freshness that suits him. I think Richard thinks he's a serious horse and we've got to treat him like that. It's not all about this year, with next year in mind too."

Regal Reality is another high-class performer to carry the stud's distinctive red and white silks and he could next be seen in the Juddmonte International Stakes at York on August 21 following his fine third to Enable in this month's Eclipse.

He was reluctant to go to post for the Eclipse and is not the most straightforward, and Richardson joked: "I'd love a plan to get inside his head.

"I think he'll probably go to York and he has a slightly quirky character but the ability is there; we'll just have to see what he does on the day."
