A triumphant fist pump as he crossed the line displayed just what winning at Cheltenham meant to Edward Vaughan as he claimed victory in one of two pony races before racing at the track on Sunday.

The 12-year-old son of the dual Grade 1-winning trainer Tim Vaughan, Edward Vaughan produced a ride full of confidence on White Water, travelling strongly and looking around for dangers before pushing the mare out for a cosy victory.

The youngest Dingle Derby winner spoke eloquently after and said: "It's been a tough season trying to qualify for it but in the end it's all paid off.

"She's one of those ponies you've got to relax on and not let her get racing too early because she can look for friends when she hits the front. So I tried to keep cool and wait until the last moment."

On his ambitions Vaughan added: "I'm never going to make it as a Flat jockey, my mum and dad are quite tall, but it's what I want to achieve in life – to be a jockey and be the best I can be.

"Richard Johnson's ridden loads of horses for my dad and I'd love to ride like him. Our stable jockey Alan Johns is very neat and professional as well and very helpful."

Harry Davies, who was also quick to celebrate victory on Little Anne, was the other winning rider as the Charles Owen Pony Race series culminated at the track.
