A half-brother to Free Eagle, Sapphire and Custom Cut, this son of Dubawi has been sent off at odds of 11-2 or shorter for all four of his starts in maidens. He has traded at in-running lows of 3.2, 2.22, 1.5 and 2.12 despite having form figures of 6868. Those four outings were over trips ranging from 1m to 1m2f and he appears to be crying out for a shorter trip. He gets that here for his first handicap and a mark of 76 could be exploited. This Moyglare-owned colt could kickstart Dermot Weld’s revival.

A fine dual-purpose mare, Lagostovegas has decent winter form to her name and will be one horse who will definitely act on the likely soft going at Galway. She couldn't land a blow in this qualified riders' handicap last season off just 76, but she won extremely well on just her second start for the champion trainer Willie Mullins at Killarney. That performance suggested she should be backed wherever she lines up next, and even off 89 she looks worth a decent wager in the feature race on the Monday at Ballybrit. Despite coming up short on the three occasions he has stepped out of handicap company, it's surely only a matter a time before Dean Ivory’s talented grey makes his mark in Group races. To be fair, he found 6f inadequate on his last two starts, including when finishing well for fourth in the Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot on his reappearance. That appeared to confirm he is as good as ever and, while he probably wouldn’t have to improve on that in this lesser contest, there is likely to be a good deal more to come from him back over 7f – the distance of his last two wins. There are no ground issues either.

This well-bred son of Dubawi is out of classy mare Land Of Dreams, which makes him a half-brother to five-time Group 1 winner Dream Ahead and dual Listed scorer Into The Dark. His pedigree is significant as both those siblings excelled with plenty of cut in the ground, and in seven runs Bin Battuta is now unbeaten in three starts on ground without firm in the description. In contrast, his form figures on good to firm read 7348. He recorded a career-best when landing a hot 1m4f handicap at Ascot last time in first-time cheekpieces and is open to enough further improvement in the headgear to suggest he can defy a 5lb rise, especially with the forecast rain likely to ensure conditions are suitable.

Michael Bell’s filly comes into the race on the crest of a wave, having hacked up on her last two starts at Yarmouth and Catterick with an aggregate winning margin of 11 lengths. This represents a step up in class, but she appears to be improving at such a rate that the hat-trick remains a distinct possibility.

Sandymount Duke can bring a flavour of rock-star chic to the festival by capturing the Tote-sponsored Galway Plate in the colours of owner/breeder Ronnie Wood. The eight-year-old, whose trainer Jessica Harrington is enjoying an incredible year, warmed up with a win on the Flat at Leopardstown, having previously won the designated Plate trial at Down Royal. He was in a similar vein of form when winning a novice hurdle at the meeting in 2015.

John Gosden's three-year-old daughter of Dansili disappointed when beaten in France last time out, but it is worth forgiving her that run in what was a messy race. The form of her win in a conditions race at Newbury in April, where she beat dual Oaks-winning stablemate Enable, speaks for itself and she can bounce back to winning ways with trip to suit.

It is a case of in for a penny and in for a pound with this strapping chestnut filly, who really caught the imagination with what she may achieve around 1m2f as a three-year-old after a controlled debut success at Newmarket a year ago. She struck over a mile in the Group 1 Prix Marcel Boussac in the autumn and the ante-post prices for the 1,000 Guineas proved too hard to resist. Injury robbed her from that line-up, but she made a promising return in second over a mile in the Falmouth Stakes, and she has real each-way potential here against Winter, the justifiable favourite.

After his recent comeback run, the one to take all the beating in the Guinness Galway Hurdle could be Thomas Edison. On his last visit to Ballybrit he fell at the final flight when with every chance in the 2015 running of this race won by stablemate Quick Jack. Off the track for 20 months, he caught the eye when keeping on into fourth in the Grade 3 Grimes Hurdle at Tipperary earlier this month and off a mark 2lb lower than in 2015 he makes plenty of appeal.

As one of just three runners who stayed on the far side in the Royal Hunt Cup, Belgian Bill can be excused his finishing position at Royal Ascot, and of the trio he narrowly came out on top. The George Baker-trained nine-year-old has an excellent record in Friday's big handicap, with an unlucky fifth in 2014, a second past the post in 2015 and a solid fourth last year. He's 3lb lower than this time last season and he rates an excellent each-way bet at 33-1.

The new king of the 6f sprinters is Harry Angel and he may be able to drop a furlong too, but in his absence Battaash is going to take some beating. Always well regarded, he was too keen for his own good as a two-year-old but, while still showing blistering pace, he is more the finished article and sees out his races strongly. Both success so far this season have come at Sandown, which is considerably stiffer than Goodwood, but given the way he travels you'd have to think there is every chance he will thrive there. He looks a solid enough favourite.

Danzeno has looked right back to his best at Ascot the last twice and will be well handicapped for the Stewards' Cup, despite his penalty after his runaway success this month. Mick Appleby is putting his recent improvement down to the new shoes Danzeno is wearing, and whatever the reason it shouldn't be forgotten he was verging on Group 1 class not that long ago.

On a good mark on his old form, Polybius has been working his way back to his very best since joining David Simcock and has run excellent races in top sprint handicaps on his last two starts. He was returning from a break when a close fourth in the Wokingham at Ascot in June and ought to be that bit sharper this time, while he ran a fine race in one run in the interim when second to the now penalised Danzeno over 5f at Ascot. The return to 6f in the Stewards' Cup will suit.

Andrew Balding’s sprinter handles undulating courses and has been on my must-back list for this meeting since his striking effort in the Epsom Dash when he was slowly away, then found trouble in running when attempting to come through the field and stormed home once in the clear to be beaten a diminishing short-head. He will be just 3lb higher at Goodwood.

Dermot Weld plans much of his season around the Galway festival and A Likely Story looks like he has been teed up for the meeting. He failed to feature in his first four runs this season and his handicap mark subsequently tumbled, but he showed he was on his way back when keeping on for second at Fairyhouse last time, posting an RPR of 60. That run was by far his best performance of the season but he earned much higher figures last year and looks likely to improve again for the trainer with the Galway gift.
