Former Hannon-trained Golden Nugget lands first RoR Eventing Championship

The first staging at Gatcombe Park of the Retrained Racehorse Eventing Championship went to Gold Nugget, ridden by Andrew Downes, who took first prize with a final score of 34.7 penalties.

In second place at Sunday's event organised by Retraining of Racehorses and sponsored by the National Trainers Federation was Dream Big, ridden by Tom McEwen and who was just 0.1 of a penalty point behind.

Highlighting the quality and strength of the class, third place was filled by the 2017 winner Zippi Jazzman, ridden by Izzy Taylor, and in fourth was Summon Up The Blood and Carlos Parro, who had performed with distinction when representing Brazil at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Gold Nugget is an eight-year-old with an exciting future in eventing. A son of Elusive City, he was in training with Richard Hannon snr and ran in the silks of Julie Wood. However, he showed little ability on the track and is now making his mark as an eventer for Jane Moss.

Di Arbuthnot, chief executive of RoR, said: “We're thrilled with how the class went both in terms of the calibre of the horses attracted and the transfer of the event to Gatcombe, where it formed an integral part of the Magic Millions Festival of British Eventing.”

First World War marked at Newmarket

Newmarket’s annual Royal British Legion Day returns this Saturday.

In support of the Royal British Legion’s ‘Thank You’ movement, which marks 100 years since the end of the First World War, this year Newmarket is encouraging racegoers to say their own ‘thank yous’ to the First World War generation at a commemorative poppy archway which will be located in the Grandstand & Paddock enclosure.

People will be able to leave their own messages by filling in a postcard and attaching it to the arch.

Cancer Support to benefit from Ayr meeting

Anyone paying to get in at Ayr on Tuesday night will be making a significant donation to Ayrshire Cancer Support.

The organisation, which is Ayr's official charity partner, will receive all £15 of every entry fee paid.

ACS chief executive Sandra McCall said: "We are delighted, on behalf of every person in Ayrshire affected by cancer, to be the recipient of vital funds, raised on evenings such as Tuesday, to deliver services throughout Ayrshire."

Ayr managing director David Brown added: "This is the latest fundraiser as part of our partnership with Ayrshire Cancer Support and we are hoping for a big turnout so we can raise a substantial amount of money."
