Trainer of the week

It was another phenomenal week for the William Haggas team with eight winners from 27 runners.

Star performers Addeybb and Alenquer were beaten but the team enjoyed a fantastic four-timer at Haydock, headlined by an eyecatching debut win for the Queen's Desert Hero.

Further success came at Haydock with Nathanael Greene scooping more than £50,000 with his handicap win on Saturday, while Doncaster novice winner Sea On Time was another notable performer.

Haggas could well be set for another big week with the July festival taking centre stage at Newmarket.

Performance of the week

Connections of Vadeni paid £50,000 to secure their shot at Saturday's Coral-Eclipse and the plan was perfectly executed by the French raider.

Christophe Soumillon produced him with a clear run with two furlongs to go and last month's French Derby winner responded courageously to power home. It was a professional and impressive performance to beat a high-class field.

The eye was immediately drawn to the unlucky-in-running Mishriff in second, and a rematch at York in the Juddmonte International would be fascinating, although the Irish Champion Stakes looks the more likely destination for Vadeni.

Juvenile of the week

Rocket Rodney arrived at Sandown as the one to beat in the Dragon Stakes and did not disappoint with a decisive victory.

The George Scott-trained runner finished second at Royal Ascot and was far too good for his rivals at Sandown, posting an impressive win by two and a half lengths.

This exciting son of Dandy Man is likely to appear in the Molecomb Stakes next and could go on to run at the Breeders' Cup later in the year.

Jockey of the week

Brian Hughes strolled to a second jump jockeys' championship last season but in Sean Bowen he has a lively challenger this time around.

Bowen has established a lead of four after a brilliant week consisting of six victories from 12 rides, ranging from Perth to Newton Abbot.

His seasonal strike-rate of 29 per cent is impressive and Sky Bet make him just 4-1 to prise the title away from Hughes.

Most controversial moment of the week

Decisions from the stewards' room were the hot talking point after Saturday's action, most notably the five-day ban given to Robert Havlin for his ride on Free Wind in the bet365 Lancashire Oaks.

The jockey struggled to find a gap approaching the three-furlong pole and, sitting behind Eshaada, Havlin opted for a run down the rail to his left. Having initially appeared to have found room, the two horses bumped before the gap closed on Havlin's mount.

Free Wind eventually found daylight to her right and rallied bravely to fly home and take the race.

While it seemed a fair assertion to think Eshaada's rider Jim Crowley might be punished, it was Havlin who was suspended for careless riding, with the stewards deeming he had "persisted and committed for his run into an insufficient gap" which was not the way most people appeared to see things.

Upset of the week

Those at Newbury on Thursday will remember the name Aidan Keeley. The apprentice jockey headed to the Berkshire track with just two outside chances but returned with a 493-1 double.

He came out on top in a tight finish to the opener on 18-1 shot Hey Ho Let's Go, then My Ambition, sent off 25-1, did enough to complete the surprise double.
