Jockey Sam Coltherd will face a brief stint on the sidelines after dislocating his shoulder in a fall at Kelso on Sunday.

The 23-year-old was taken immediately from the course to Borders General Hospital after a fall from Arcandy – trained by father Stuart – at the final flight of the 2m5f mares' novice hurdle.

Coltherd now faces up to ten days out of action after he received treatment at the hospital and was released later that evening.

"I dislocated my shoulder in the fall and got it put back in last night," Coltherd said on Monday. "As soon as it got put back in I was pain-free within an hour. I had a good night's sleep last night and this morning it's given me no hassle at all.

"It's still in a sling, but it's all good at the moment. I can't complain really as there are no fractures."

Coltherd is aiming to return to action at Newcastle a week on Saturday but his enforced absence has left him frustrated as he had been optimistic about success in the coming days, starting with Graystown in a 2m4f handicap chase (1.50) at Hexham on Wednesday.

Coltherd won on the nine-year-old at the same track in October, but Sean Quinlan has been booked in his absence, and the jockey said: "I had some really nice chances this week with Graystown back out at his favourite track on Wednesday, while I particularly like Rollerruler, who runs at Carlisle on Sunday (12.30).

"It's a shame to miss them and I'll probably be out for the next seven to ten days. I aim to be back for Newcastle, and if not then I'll be ready for Boxing Day."
