Wembley made new favourite for the 2,000 Guineas

Wembley became the new favourite on Tuesday for Saturday's Qipco 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket as bookmakers trimmed the Aidan O'Brien-trained runner into a top-priced 9-2.

The Galileo colt ran six times as a juvenile last season, winning a minor event at Roscommon, but finished runner-up at the highest level in the National Stakes and the Dewhurst Stakes on the Rowley Mile. He is among five challengers O'Brien could field in the Classic.

Coral made Wembley their 9-2 joint-favourite (from 6-1) for the Guineas alongside Thunder Moon, who is trained by O'Brien's son Joseph.

The firm's David Stevens said: "Although Wembley hit the bar twice at the top level last season, that hasn't stopped punters thinking he can score at Group 1 level in this weekend's Qipco 2,000 Guineas, and he's joined his National Stakes conqueror Thunder Moon at the head of the wide-open market."

William Hill clipped Wembley into 4-1 (from 6-1) and Ladbrokes are 9-2 (from 11-2) about the three-year-old, now the outright market leader in plenty of bookmaker lists.

"The 2,000 Guineas betting has seen lots of changes in the last 24 hours to result in Wembley becoming the new favourite, and there could be plenty more of that in the next 48 hours as running and riding plans are firmed up," said Ladbrokes spokesman Jon Lees.

Dewhurst winner St Mark's Basilica, a 6-1 shot, also represents Aidan O'Brien, as does Battleground, successful at Royal Ascot and Glorious Goodwood last summer and 10-1 with Hills for the Guineas.

O'Brien is in the hunt for a record-extending 11th victory in the one mile Group 1, which takes place a day before the fillies get their chance in Sunday's Qipco 1,000 Guineas.

Charlie Fellowes will be represented in the race for the first time by Vadream, a best-price 25-1 shot who was third in the Fred Darling at Newbury recently.

The trainer said on Tuesday: "Jamie Spencer came in and rode Vadream in work this morning and was delighted with her.

"We've had a clear run with her since the Fred Darling and that will have put her spot-on. There is a slight question mark whether she will get the mile, but she has a big stride for a medium-sized filly so we're hopeful she will.

"It will be my first runner in a Classic and it's shaping into an interesting race. The vibes are very strong about Santa Barbara, but outside her it's an open race."

The going at Newmarket was described as good to firm on Tuesday morning with sunny spells and light showers possible from Thursday.
