Jockey Rossa Ryan has revealed he will miss Royal Ascot after undergoing an operation to treat appendicitis.

Ryan has been out of action since breaking his collarbone in a fall at Wolverhampton last month, but that injury was healing well and on Sunday the 20-year-old had spoken of his eagerness to return to the saddle in time for the royal meeting, having already missed out on the ride on Cazoo Derby runner-up Mojo Star.

However, Ryan has now met with a new setback after requiring treatment for appendicitis, and he did not put a time frame on his return.

In a statement released on Twitter, Ryan said: "It is with great sadness that I can confirm I will not be riding at Royal Ascot next week. Unfortunately I had an operation on June 8 due to appendicitis which will put me out for a little longer.

"It is hugely disappointing because my collarbone has mended incredibly well and I was preparing to take my fitness test in readiness for Royal Ascot.

"It seems for some reason or another now is not my time, but it will all come good soon. I will be back in the gym at Oaksey House fighting to be fit to ride as soon as possible."

Ryan had been enjoying a superb 2021 and his tally of 64 winners had already bettered the total he managed last year.
