Southwell: 'It's nice to know I've still got it!' - Laura Pearson back with a winner
Royal Ascot-winning apprentice Laura Pearson, who broke a bone in her neck in a fall at Epsom in July, was delighted to ride the first winner of her comeback on Owens Lad.
She likened her return to action last month to "going back home" and after taking the 1m4f classified stakes on the 7-1 shot, she said on Sky Sports Racing: "It's brilliant. I was out for about six months, I fractured my C7 in my neck.
"The main thing that held me back was the concussion side of things, it's nice to be back. The Injured Jockeys Fund has been brilliant and it's nice to know I've still got it!"
Paying Respect
Patience and a willingness to dip into his own pocket paid off for James Stafford when With Respect scored his first win since landing a Newbury maiden on his debut in 2019.
The Thurloe Thoroughbreds founder kept faith in the six-year-old, who was sidelined for nearly two years with tendon trouble, and put up his own money to help the horse's recuperation.
After With Respect had taken the first leg of the 6f handicap in the syndicate's familiar green and yellow colours, trainer Hughie Morrison said: "You must give James Stafford his due as he paid for this horse's convalescence. The Thurloe syndicate had a few quid in the kitty, so they used that and some of their own money to keep him turned away for 18 months.
"We've helped them out a bit and when they told the former owners he was back in training and about to run, they virtually all came back in.
"It's also well done to Sophie Reed, the young apprentice who rides him every day at home. She's done a very good job."
Jockey Jason Hart went on to complete a treble on Jer Batt and Lord Cherry.
