Racing resumes at Les Landes in Jersey after strangles outbreak

The Jersey Racing Club has announced that racing will resume at Les Landes on Sunday after a case of strangles was confirmed at a trainer's yard last month.

Sunday's meeting which features Jersey's most important sprint – the Dallas Burston Group 2018 Jersey Bullet – will be restricted to Channel Island-based runners in order to avoid cross contamination between horses in the Channel Island and those in the UK.

Of six currently licensed trainers on the island, four have been given the all-clear to race on Sunday and all entries from stables who have not been cleared, as well as all UK entries, will be refunded by the Jersey Racing Club.

Racing Club president Tony Taylor said in a statement: “With a pool of around 50 horses now based in Jersey we feel that it is definitely possible to have a very competitive meeting even with restrictions in place."

“Animal welfare remains the priority and hopefully by taking these carefully considered measures now we will have a strong and healthy pool of horses ready for the remainder of the season.”
