One of the highlights of high summer is the Moet & Chandon July festival at Newmarket, featuring three days of quality racing that is much about the future as the present.

The meeting climaxes on Saturday with the Group 1 Darley July Cup, which is regarded as the most prestigious sprint in Europe.

The opening day features two Group 2 races, the Arqana-backed July Stakes and Princess of Wales's Stakes, while there is also a St Leger trial, the Group 3 Bahrain Trophy, plus a £100,000 handicap, which will all be screened on ITV3.

Royal Ascot winners Atty Persse and Rajasinghe are among the headline acts, while the Princess of Wales's features last year's Eclipse winner Hawkbill.

On a busy day in a busy week there are also afternoon fixtures at Carlisle and Doncaster, plus evening action from Epsom and Newbury. Racing in Ireland starts at Downpatrick from 3.05 with an evening card from Leopardstown.

What's on today?

The July festival is a big draw on its own but it also features the return of racing's biggest draw in Frankie Dettori, who resumes after injury.

Dettori was forced to miss Royal Ascot after a paddock accident the week before the meeting and will be refreshed for this home fixture. With Saturday's Darley Irish Oaks, in which he partners Oaks winner Enable, uppermost in his priorities he starts back with just two mounts.

The declarations not only for the Curragh Classic but the July Cup and John Smith's Cup will be through during the morning.

Final thought

Spare a thought for the trainers who ahead of Super Saturday are likely to be heavily engaged until lunchtime trying to find a jockey available on this most congested of racedays.
