The Briefing: all the key details for Clonmel Oil Chase day

The weekend is upon us early with Cheltenham's November meeting starting tomorrow, but before that we have the Grade 2 Clonmel Oil Chase to look forward to.

It can be a race for the usual faces in Irish Graded races to have their day in the sun and that certainly applies to A Toi Phil, who is fast becoming the General Tufto of these contests.

Most of the interest, however, concerns Kemboy, who signed off last season with a win at Punchestown and could have Grade 1 ambitions.

As it happens, the real General Tufto runs today at Southwell, naturally. That is one of three British afternoon cards, the others at Taunton and Ludlow, followed by another two all-weather meetings in the evening at Kempton and Chelmsford, the lights restored at the latter after Tuesday's abrupt end.

It is often easy, sometimes even wise, to take a dim view of late-season form like Kemboy's Punchestown win. He did, however, look a horse that might have challenged in the JLT if he had jumped better. He probably should win today on ability, but it is his jumping that may give clues as to whether he is ready for the bigger days ahead.
