There was good news to start the week after this afternoon's fixture at Salisbury got the all clear following an 8am inspection.

The track tweeted: "Racing goes ahead. A dry and windy night and today expected to stay dry, overcast and windy, with the rain expected to remain further to the east of our location."

Despite the fixture getting the green light there are a number of non-runners, mostly due to the going.

A wet week had also threatened Nottingham's card on Tuesday but following a "dramatically improved forecast", course officials cancelled today's 4pm inspection.

The outlook is far better for the weekend with more typical weather forecast for Guineas weekend.

Salisbury joins Thirsk and Wolverhampton in providing the afternoon schedule, while the evening line-up is comprised of racing at Windsor, Southwell and Kilbeggan.

What to read

The Flat turf season in Europe really warmed up as last year's champion Cracksman produced a scintillating return to action by stretching away to a comeback win in the Group 1 Prix Ganay at Longchamp.

Our French racing correspondent Scott Burton was on the scene as Anthony Oppenheimer's colt showed his rivals for top honours, including his own stablemate Enable, what they may face in 2018.

You can read his reportof the performance at Longchamp which was officially reopened on Sunday after a multi-million euro refit.

What to watch

Staying on the Guineas theme, it is set to be a big weekend for Middleham with the racing centre having a leading candidate in each of the Classics.

Here, Mark Johnston talks about the chances of Elarqam in the Qipco 2,000 Guineas.

While neighbour Karl Burke has high hopes for Laurens in the Qipco 1,000 Guineas.

The best of Racing Post Sport

Tottenham play Watford in the evening's Premier League fixture and Mark Langdon believes it could be a great opportunity for Harry Kane to put behind him the social media grief he has suffered lately and return to scoring form.

Final thought

It could be a big day for Paul Nicholls who unlike other leading jumps trainers has not been much of a player of the Flat code. That will change when he is due to saddle his first two-year-old runner at Salisbury.

Nicholls hopes to find out What's what with first two-year-old runner
